The Complete Garage Sale Checklist
Updated July 2026 · 5 min read
A great garage sale is 90% preparation. Work through this checklist - organized by the week before, the night before, and the morning of - and sale day runs itself. Tip: Rummage Register lets you schedule a future sale day and attach a checklist right in the app, so your plan and your sales tracker live in the same place.
The Week Before
- Check local rules. Some towns require a (usually free) garage sale permit and limit sign placement. One phone call saves a fine.
- Pick your date and rain plan. Saturday mornings win; Friday-Saturday two-day sales catch both crowds. Check the forecast and have a garage-only fallback.
- Declutter room by room. Box items as you go - "kitchen," "toys," "clothes" - so sale-day layout is just unboxing by zone.
- Price everything as you box it. Use the pricing cheat sheet: 10-30% of retail, in quarter increments. Multi-family sale? Assign each family a sticker color (see multi-family guide).
- Advertise. Post on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and Nextdoor with photos of your best items, your address, and your hours. "Huge multi-family sale" out-pulls "garage sale" every time.
- Get change from the bank. $100 float: two rolls of quarters, forty $1s, six $5s, one $10 - full breakdown in how much change to have.
- Create your sale day in Rummage Register. Set the date, add your earnings goal, add sellers, and build your checklist in the app so nothing below gets missed.
The Night Before
- Make your signs. Big, bold, few words: "SALE + arrow + address." Neon poster board, thick marker, readable at 30 mph. Place them at the nearest busy intersections (where allowed).
- Stage tables and layout. Clothes on racks or tables (never tarps on the ground), big-ticket items near the curb as bait, checkout table by the garage door.
- Test electronics. Run an extension cord to the checkout so buyers can verify that lamp/mixer/console works. Working items sell for 2-3× "untested."
- Set up price presets in the app. Add one-tap presets for 25¢, 50¢, $1, $5 so checkout is instant tomorrow.
- Charge your phone (and a battery pack). Your phone is your register tomorrow.
The Morning Of
- Out by sunrise. Early birds arrive before your posted time - being ready for them is free money.
- Post your signs and confirm your online ads show "happening today."
- Count your float into the cash box (or apron) and note the amount.
- Open the app to your sale day. First sale of the morning: tap, amount, done. The running total does the rest.
- Track visitors if you're curious. The visitor counter tells you whether your ads worked - good intel for next time.
- Half-price signs ready for the final hours. Move the leftovers; the goal is an empty garage.

- Take down every sign. Your neighbors (and your town's code office) thank you.
- Settle up. Cash box minus float should match the app's total; per-seller payouts are already calculated.
- Review your charts. Best hour, average sale, total visitors - save it for planning next year's sale.
- Donate the leftovers same-day so they don't move back into the garage. Get a receipt for taxes.
